2D Matrix Code
A 2D matrix code encodes data in a grid of dark and light cells in both dimensions — with finder patterns for orientation and error correction for damaged reads.
What You Need to Know
QR Code, Data Matrix, and Aztec Code abandon bars entirely: the symbol is a square or rectangle of cells, located and oriented by dedicated finder or orientation patterns, and decoded as a bitmap of bits. Encoding capacity explodes — up to 7,089 numeric digits in a QR Code Version 40 — and Reed-Solomon error correction lets a damaged symbol still decode completely.
Matrix codes also encode direction and structure explicitly, so they read at any rotation, on curved surfaces (with appropriate optics), and even directly dot-peened or laser-etched into parts (Data Matrix dominates direct part marking). The trade-offs: they require image-based scanners (a laser line cannot see a grid), need a quiet-zone border on all four sides, and minimum cell size is bounded by print resolution and camera resolution together rather than laser spot size.
