Why Shopify Merchants Need a Barcode Generator

Shopify's inventory system is built around barcodes. Every product and variant in your catalog can carry a barcode (UPC, EAN, GTIN, ISBN) that Shopify uses for POS checkout, inventory tracking, stock transfers between locations, and purchase order receiving. Without a barcode, staff must manually look up products — slowing down checkout and increasing errors. Generating barcodes before you add products to Shopify means your inventory is scan-ready from day one. Our free generator supports all barcode formats Shopify accepts, and produces high-resolution files you can print on any label sheet.

How to Add Barcodes to Your Shopify Products

  1. 1

Decide on your barcode format: UPC-A or EAN-13 for retail products you sell in stores; Code 128 for internal SKU tracking only.

  2. 2

Enter your product number (UPC, EAN, or internal SKU) in our generator and select the format.

  3. 3

    Download the barcode as PNG.

  4. 4

In Shopify Admin, go to Products → select a product → scroll to Inventory → paste the barcode number into the 'Barcode (ISBN, UPC, GTIN, etc.)' field.

  5. 5

Print the label and apply it to your product packaging. Use the Shopify Retail Barcode Labels app to print directly from your admin.

Frequently Asked Questions

What barcode format does Shopify use?

Shopify accepts any barcode format in its inventory barcode field, but for POS scanning and retail compatibility, UPC-A (12 digits) and EAN-13 (13 digits) are the standard choices. Code 128 is widely used for internal SKU labels. Shopify's own Retail Barcode Labels app can print all of these formats.

Do I need a GS1 barcode to sell on Shopify?

Not necessarily. If you're only selling through your own Shopify store, you can create internal barcodes using any format (Code 128 is popular). However, if you sell in physical retail stores, on Amazon, or on other marketplaces alongside Shopify, you'll need GS1-registered UPC or EAN numbers to avoid barcode conflicts.

How do I print barcode labels for Shopify products?

Download your barcode as a PNG from our generator. Then use Shopify's built-in Retail Barcode Labels app (free) to design and print labels directly from your Shopify admin, or paste the PNG into a Word or Google Docs label template and print onto Avery-compatible label sheets.

Can I generate barcodes for all my Shopify variants (size, color, etc.)?

Yes. Each variant needs a unique barcode. Use our bulk barcode generator — enter one SKU per line and download all barcodes as a ZIP. Then import them into Shopify via CSV (Products → Export → add barcode column → Import) to update all variants at once.

What DPI should I use when printing Shopify barcode labels?

Print at 300 DPI minimum for reliable scanning. Our PNG export is high-resolution and our SVG is infinitely scalable — both are suitable for laser printers. For high-volume label printing, a thermal printer (such as a Zebra or Dymo) with our SVG output gives the sharpest results.
