What Is GS1-14 (GTIN-14)?

The GS1-14, better known as the GTIN-14 or EAN/UCC-14, is not primarily a barcode picture but a number: a 14-digit Global Trade Item Number used to identify packaging levels above the consumer unit — inner packs, cases, and cartons. It is built by prefixing a GTIN-13 (or GTIN-12 with a leading zero) with an indicator digit 1-8, or by using prefix 9 for variable-measure items, then recomputing the final Mod 10 check digit.

On real cartons the GTIN-14 travels inside one of two carriers: a GS1-128 symbol with Application Identifier (01) — which is what this generator produces — or an ITF-14 symbol for direct printing on corrugated. GS1-128 is the more versatile choice (narrower, extendable with lot and expiry AIs); ITF-14 tolerates rough press printing. Either way, the 14 digits are the key that links case-level scans to the same product data as the retail unit.

Common Applications

  • Case and carton identification in retail supply chains
  • Warehouse receiving and cross-docking at pack level
  • EDI order and dispatch messages referencing pack-level GTINs

GS1-14 (GTIN-14) FAQ

What is the indicator digit in a GTIN-14?

The first digit distinguishes packaging levels of the same product: 1-8 for fixed-count packs (1 might be a 6-pack case, 2 a master case), 9 for variable-measure items, and 0 meaning the GTIN-14 is just a zero-padded GTIN-13. Each level gets its own indicator so cases and units never collide in inventory systems.

Should my carton use GS1-128 or ITF-14 for the GTIN-14?

Use ITF-14 when printing directly on corrugated with a flexographic press and carrying only the GTIN — it survives plate spread and ink bleed. Use GS1-128 with AI (01) on a thermal label when you also need lot, expiry, or SSCC data, or when symbol width is tight. Both are fully GS1-compliant.
