Which Barcode Do You Actually Need? Code 128 vs EAN-13 vs UPC-A, Explained for Sellers and Warehouses

A plain-English guide to picking the right barcode — Code 128, EAN-13, UPC-A, and QR — for e-commerce listings, warehouse labels, and shipping, plus how to generate them free.

Barcode vs QR code: know the difference

  • 1D barcode (the classic vertical bars): A machine scans it horizontally and reads a string of digits/letters. Low capacity, fast, cheap — perfect for products, bin locations, and documents.
  • 2D code (QR code): Stores much more (URLs, text, contact info) and scans with a phone. Great for event check-ins, promo material, and anti-counterfeit tracing. If you want a code that jumps to a URL, try the QR Code generator.

For most "list a product / print a label" jobs, a 1D barcode is all you need.

How to pick a 1D barcode

Quick rule of thumb:

  • Listing products on a marketplace → EAN-13 (intl.) or UPC-A (North America). Sellers on Amazon should also read our Amazon barcode guide.
  • Warehouse bin locations, inbound/outbound slips, internal traceability → Code 128, the most free-form. For printing many at once, see batch Code 128 generation.
  • Outer shipping cartons → ITF-14.

When to use a QR code instead

  • Event / meeting check-ins
  • Posters and business cards (scan to open a site)
  • Product anti-counterfeit / traceability (a QR can carry a URL)

A few practical tips

  1. Keep a quiet zone: leave blank margins on both sides of the barcode or scanners will fail.
  2. Print resolution: aim for 300 DPI or higher for print; SVG is the safest for vector output.
  3. Check digits: EAN-13 / UPC-A have a check digit — let a good tool compute it; don't type it by hand.
  4. Stay compliant for retail: real sellable product codes need a GS1 prefix — don't just make one up.
