Direct Part Marking (DPM)

Direct part marking is applying a barcode straight onto a component — dot-peened, laser-etched, or electrochemically engraved — rather than printing a label, with Data Matrix as the dominant symbology.

What You Need to Know

Aerospace, automotive, electronics, and medical-device manufacturers mark parts for lifetime traceability: turbine blades, PCBs, surgical instruments carry a 2D Data Matrix etched into the surface itself. DPM marks survive heat, chemicals, and abrasion that would destroy any label. The square finder pattern of Data Matrix and its solid L-border make it locatable on reflective, curved, textured metal where other symbologies would not be found at all.

DPM is the hardest scanning regime in the industry: contrast may be a few percent (dark-on-dark pits under grazing light), cells are often circular dots rather than squares, and surfaces are curved or shiny. Scanners implement DPM-specific illumination modes and decoding strategies; ISO/IEC 29158 (formerly TR 29158) extends the 15415 grading methodology for these conditions.
