What Is HIBC Code 39?
HIBC Code 39 is Code 39 carrying a Health Industry Bar Code (HIBC) data structure under the ANSI/HIBC Supplier Labeling standard. Like its Code 128 sibling, the payload starts with a plus sign, followed by the labeler identification code, item reference, and optional lot or serial data, ending with a Mod 43 check character. Code 39's simpler alphabet suits the largely uppercase-alphanumeric world of medical product codes.
It is the older of the two HIBC carriers and remains common in hospital inventories, blood bag labeling ecosystems, and device packaging installed before Code 128's density advantage made HIBC Code 128 the default recommendation. Both encode identical HIBC data structures, so the choice is carrier economics: Code 39 for legacy compatibility, Code 128 for narrower symbols on tight labels.

HIBC Code 39 or HIBC Code 128 — which should I print?
If the label has room and downstream scanners are older, HIBC Code 39 is bulletproof. If label space is tight — small device labels, vials — HIBC Code 128 encodes the same HIBC data in a significantly narrower symbol. Both are equally standard-compliant; HIBCC recommends Code 128 for new designs.
Is the HIBC check character the same as Code 39 Mod 43?
It is the same algorithm applied to the same alphabet, but it is mandatory and part of the data structure (transmitted with the string), whereas plain Code 39's Mod 43 is optional. The HIBC character is computed over the entire payload including the leading + sign.
