Omni-Directional Reading

Omni-directional reading means a barcode can be scanned successfully regardless of the angle at which the scanner beam crosses the symbol.

What You Need to Know

Supermarket checkout scanners project patterns of many laser lines in different orientations; for a symbol to be readable by all of them, its structure must present a decodable path at any angle. EAN/UPC achieves this with its guard-bar pattern and full-height bars — any beam crossing the symbol horizontally at any skew intersects the guards and enough of the data. GS1 DataBar Omnidirectional and Stacked follow the same principle for smaller packages.

Not every symbology qualifies: Code 128 and Code 39 scan reliably only when the beam roughly parallels the bar axis (typically held in "wand" or single-line orientation). This is why retail mandates EAN/UPC or DataBar for point-of-sale items while warehouses happily use Code 128 under operator-aimed handheld scanners. If your barcode must survive being tossed randomly across a scanner window, choose an omni-directional symbology.
