X-Dimension
The X-dimension is the width of the narrowest module in a barcode — the single most important number controlling symbol size, density, and scanner compatibility.
What You Need to Know
Every dimension of a linear barcode scales from the X-dimension: bar widths, space widths, quiet zones (expressed as multiples of X), and overall symbol width. A smaller X packs more data per inch but demands higher printer resolution and finer scanner optics. At a 0.19 mm X-dimension, Code 128 achieves roughly 24 digits per inch; doubling the X to 0.38 mm halves that density but makes the symbol far easier to scan with cheap handheld devices.
Retail and logistics standards constrain the X-dimension explicitly. GS1 specifies nominal X-dimensions for EAN/UPC (0.264 mm ≈ 10.4 mils at 100% magnification) and tolerance bands for ITF-14 carton codes, because point-of-sale and warehouse scanners are calibrated to expect them. When a barcode "will not scan" in the field, an out-of-spec X-dimension — often caused by scaling artwork without measuring — is one of the first suspects.
