Barcode Verification
Barcode verification is the controlled, instrument-based measurement of a printed barcode against ISO quality parameters — as distinct from merely scanning it successfully.
What You Need to Know
Scanning proves one symbol worked once, on one scanner, at one moment; verification grades the print quality the way a trading partner's equipment will measure it. A verifier illuminates the symbol with standardized geometry (a defined wavelength, aperture, and angle) and produces ISO/IEC 15415 (2D) or 15416 (linear) parameter grades: contrast, modulation, defects, decodability, quiet zones, and more, averaged into an overall grade from 4.0 (A) down to 0.0 (F).
Major retailers and regulators require verification grades at goods-receipt — a supplier whose cartons grade below a stated threshold faces chargebacks. Verification should be done on the actual printing process (same press, substrate, and ink), not on a proof from a different device, because PCS and defects depend on the real print channel. If you ship to big-box retail, a verifier is not optional equipment.
