Aperture

The aperture is the effective diameter of the light spot a verifier (or scanner) samples the barcode with — which must be matched to the symbol's X-dimension to measure it fairly.

What You Need to Know

A verifier does not sample points; it averages reflectance over a circular spot of a standardized size, such as 0.1 mm (4 mil), 0.125 mm (5 mil), 0.15 mm (6 mil), or 0.25 mm (10 mil). If the aperture is large relative to the module width, fine bars blur into spaces, artificially destroying modulation and decodability grades. ISO application standards therefore bind the aperture to the X-dimension: 6 mil for general retail barcodes, 10 mil for logistics symbols.

Aperture mismatch is the classic reason a barcode grades differently on two verifiers. When a trading partner specifies "ISO/IEC 15416 with 6 mil aperture," they are fixing the measurement lens, and your verifier must be configured identically. For online-generated barcodes destined for print, the practical implication is simpler: choose an X-dimension comfortably above the finest aperture your verification regime will use.
