Verification Grade
A verification grade is the 4.0-to-0.0 (letter A-to-F) quality score a verifier assigns a printed barcode from the ISO/IEC 15415 or 15416 parameter grades.
What You Need to Know
Each measured parameter — contrast, modulation, defects, decodability, quiet zone, and others — receives its own numeric grade, and the overall symbol grade equals the lowest of them: a barcode is graded by its weakest link. Grade 3.0 (B) is the common minimum for general retail scanning; regulated pharma and high-speed logistics lines frequently demand higher. A single failing parameter, even with everything else perfect, caps the grade.
Because grading depends on the measurement aperture and illumination the standard fixes per application, results from different verifier classes are comparable only when the settings match the intended scanning environment — a 6 mil aperture suits general retail, 10 mil heavy logistics. Read the parameter sub-grades, not just the letter: a 1.5 overall driven by low modulation points to a different fix (print gain, X-dimension) than one driven by defects (a void in a bar).
