First-Pass Read Rate
The first-pass read rate is the percentage of scan attempts that succeed on the first try — the operational statistic that separates "technically decodable" barcodes from ones that keep a production line moving.
What You Need to Know
A symbology that decodes 99% of the time still fails one scan in a hundred; on a conveyor moving 60 items a minute, that is a jam or manual re-scan every couple of minutes. Throughput-critical environments — sortation, high-speed retail, clinical workflows — target first-pass read rates above 99.9%, which is why they invest in verification, print quality, and scanner geometry rather than trusting a symbol that "scans fine when I try it."
First-pass rate aggregates every failure source: print quality (contrast, defects), design (quiet zones, X-dimension, height for the beam geometry), and operational factors (label placement, curvature, wrap-around scanning). Measuring it is simple — log N scan attempts and count successes — and the number directly monetizes barcode quality: every point of read rate is labor, throughput, and error cost.
